Monica Iglecia and I are coordinating an exploratory pilot survey of burned and not burned areas in the Flint Hills of Kansas and Osage Hills of Oklahoma. Summer and fall burning may align with the passage of fall (southbound) migrating shorebirds, especially the Buff-breasted Sandpiper a species of high conservation concern and a species that might benefit from burning at this time of year. Simple surveys of burned and not burned areas will help determine if summer and fall burning warrants further study. More to come later.
