Manomet, working in partnership with The Nature Conservancy, has the opportunity to bring a flyway-scale perspective to the conservation efforts occurring in the Flint Hills. Despite significant gains in conservation holdings in the Flint Hills, questions still remain about the timing of shorebird use and how new management strategies (e.g. focused burning in September to manage invasive plants and spread the window of burning out across the year) affect shorebird habitat. Monitoring continues to be a challenge in the region, with spring surveys no longer occurring and a general lack of knowledge or shorebird use in the Flint Hills during fall migration. A Midcontinental Americas Shorebird Initiative is in development and lessons learned in the Flint Hills will contribute to this strategy.
